the beginning

The journey of Notun Disha began in 2008, when a child was diagnosed with a heart condition but his father lacked the financial means for treatment. Funds were raised through a lottery, enabling the child’s successful recovery. This marked the beginning of a humanitarian mission to support the underprivileged.

In the early years, assistance was provided by seeking contributions from different sources. In 2017, a few dedicated members decided to feed those who spent their nights at the railway station, at least once a week. The initiative began with home-cooked meals prepared and distributed with love.

the journey

In 2020, when the world came to a standstill, Notun Disha did not stop. The Secretary, Mr. Subir Rana, personally cooked at his home and distributed food to the needy. Many others came forward to extend their helping hands, and thus the spirit of service grew stronger. From Guskara in East Burdwan, Notun Disha began showing a new path of hope. Despite countless struggles, the small sapling planted years ago has grown into a great tree, nurtured by the support and compassion of many people.

Gradually, Notun Disha began spreading its branches, adding new initiatives over time. During the food distribution programs, children were also present. At their request, a Pathshala (informal school) was started. The wish to read, to learn, is a fundamental right — and when that right comes as an earnest plea, an educated society cannot turn away. Soon, college professors, school teachers, and respected local figures joined to teach.

the future

As poet Sukanta once said: “If you have only one coin, you must buy bread. But if you have two, then buy a flower too, for flowers bring joy to the heart.” Inspired by this thought, Notun Disha also introduced dance, music, and recitation classes to nurture children’s creativity and mental well-being. Members of the younger generation stepped forward with enthusiasm to teach, while modern needs brought computer education into Notun Disha as well. Thus, the children were given a complete environment for holistic growth.

Looking ahead, Notun Disha is exploring new opportunities. With the New Education Policy introducing internships in colleges, the organization is considering facilitating internships under its programs, thus opening a new chapter in its journey of service.
